GLCN is involved in numerous global, regional and national
initiatives and projects related to land cover, land cover
change and environmental databases development. The Land Cover
Classification System is widely applied to generate a legend
according to the LCCS standard.
GLCN Land Cover datasets

GLCN is supporting the development of national and regional land cover
data sets according to its standards and methodologies. Following is
the list of initiatives for which outputs such as the land cover database, the
change assessment, and the mapping accuracy estimates were produced
(some initiatives are currently on going):
- NATIONAL
- REGIONAL
Fouta Djallon Highlands' Land Cover Mapping and Change Analysis, COMPLETED
(area including Guinea, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Sénégal and Sierra Leone)
Multipurpose
Africover Database for the Environmental Resources (MADE), COMPLETED
(Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Kenya,
Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda)
Regional harmonization programme (RHAP) for Himalaya, COMPLETED
(area among Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan)
GLOBAL Land Cover datasets

Global Land Cover SHARE of year 2014 - Beta-Release 1.0
A new FAO land cover product: the "Global Land Cover SHARE" has
been launched. It brings global land cover data under one roof for
the first time and represents the most-reliable global view of planetary
land cover assembled to-date.

Globcover-derived national databases for African countries
GLCN is promoting the development of national land cover data
sets ready to be used in GLCN software for mapping and analysis.
Source data for this initiative is the most
recent (2005) and detailed (300 m) global land cover
database available on the market: the Globcover,
which was published in 2008 as result of an initiative
launched in 2004 by the European Space Agency (ESA).
Globcover is currently the best archive on land cover globally.

Globcover-derived national databases for UN-REDD pilot countries
FAO-NRCE has promoted the re-processing of the Globcover (global version) land cover
archive at national extent for 9 countries as part of the activities
of United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from
Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD). These 9 countries
were selected by UN-REDD for the phase 1 of the programme.

GlobCover
This link takes you to the GlobCover Portal, which provides access
to the results of the GlobCover project. GlobCover is an ESA initiative, in partnership with JRC,
EEA, FAO, UNEP, GOFC-GOLD and IGBP, that delivers global composite and land
cover maps (year 2005/2006) using as input observations from the 300m MERIS
sensor on board the ENVISAT satellite mission.

GLC2000
In collaboration with a network of international partners from around the world,
the Global Vegetation Monitoring (GVM) unit of the Joint Research
Centre (JRC) compiled a harmonized global land cover classification
for the year 2000 (GLC2000) database, using data acquired by the
SPOT4 Vegetation instrument.
The regional and global data are available free of charge for all
non-commercial applications from the
JRC website.
Land Cover data in FAO

FAO's geo-spatial data repository and metadata catalogue
GeoNetwork archives metadata and data on several land cover initiatives.
Throug its interface, these records can be retrieved, consulted,
and eventually accessed (directly or contacting the data owner.
